Preventive Care & Hygiene
At Bayley Dental in Waterloo ON we offer a wide variety of cosmetic and restorative treatments, to correct damage, oral disease, and esthetic concerns. However, we believe that the best cure is prevention. Therefore, our practice has a strong focus on preventive dental care and hygiene.
For most patients, we recommend hygiene visits twice annually, but this can vary depending on your oral health needs. The appointment includes:
- Comprehensive exam – Early detection is the key to conservative, effective treatment of oral disease. Our examination process includes oral cancer screening.
- Patient education – How effective is your brushing technique? How do your prescription medications affect your oral health? What about nutrition? Of course, we don’t expect you to have all the answers. That’s what we’re here for. We will guide and advise you, while answering all your oral health questions.
- Cleaning and polishing – Brushing and flossing can leave behind bits of plaque in hard to reach places, such as the gum line or narrow spaces between teeth. It quickly hardens and becomes tartar, which is difficult to remove without dental tools. During dental cleaning, the hygienist removes accumulated plaque and tartar before it causes decay or disease. Tooth surfaces are also polished, making them more resistant to plaque buildup.
Maintaining A Healthy Mouth
The maintenance of clean teeth and gums revolves around brushing and flossing. Place the toothbrush bristles next to the gum line on the outer surfaces of the teeth. Brush gently, using a back and forth technique with the toothbrush. For the inner surface of the teeth, place the bristles next to the gum line and brush in a circular motion. The inside of the mouth is where the most plaque accumulates. Brush the surface of the teeth where the chewing of food takes place in the same circular motion. To clean those places between the teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach, floss once a day to remove food and plaque before it can cause gum disease. So eat a well-balanced diet, brush twice daily, and schedule regular checkups with the dentist.
- Gum therapy – For patients with a history of periodontal disease, we customize a maintenance and treatment plan. This normally includes an increased frequency of hygiene appointments.

Everyone needs to brush, floss, and see a dentist regularly. However, beyond those basics, oral health needs are very individual. Your age, medical and dental history, family history, medical conditions, prescription and over the counter medications, and many other factors affect your teeth – and the best way to care for them.
